Thank you to the Singapore Scouts Association for sharing this article about the Scouts’ participation in Singapore World Water Day on 3 March!

The Singapore Scouts Association booth showcased our programmes related to stewardship of the environment: the Water Ambassador badge programme in partnership with PUB, and our Better World Framework programmes. We also put up a static display of various liquids showing their pH levels as part of our water awareness sharing.

Scouts encouraged booth visitors to make pledges towards climate action through iPad via the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) website, while our 45 strong contingent made pledges with personal mobile phones.

Asking members of the public to take the climate action pledge was a rather interesting experience. Most were happy to pledge what they could do to fight climate change. Some had difficulty understanding the actions listed, so we gave them examples to explain the options so that they could take the climate action pledge meaningfully.

The highlight for our youth was the privilege to interact with our president, Her Excellency Madam Halimah Yacob, and Minister for the Environment Masagos Zulkifli, who visited our booth after the opening ceremony.Scouts (2)Scouts (3)

Here are some reflections from the Scouts who were involved in the booth:

Her Excellency was very encouraging of our efforts to be stewards of the environment

It was a privilege to explain our role in climate action and ask her to take the pledge

The Scouts Association’s efforts to support the Year of Climate Action include making a conscientious effort to reduce and recycle the waste we generate by correctly identifying which items can be recycled and disposing of them properly in a recycling bin. We will also take shorter showers and install water saving devices.

Our message to all: even though this year has been designated as the ‘Year of Climate Action’, we should already have performed climate action in the years before and the years to come. It is not about a year’s action, but a whole life’s process. It is never too late to start!
